This research was designed to probe the extent of aspirin consumption in a rural population. Over half (52%) reported taking aspirin for a variety of health concerns, with relief of headache (70.9%) being cited as the major reason. General body pain and arthritis were the next ranked reasons. The persuasive influence of advertising consumption of aspirin for first-time heart attack protection in healthy consumers was also studied. Only 2.1% of 825 of those seeing such ads actually started consuming aspirin for this purpose. This study also indicated the wide-spread acceptance of aspiring as a safe self-administered medication with 8.4% stating they would take aspirin without a doctor's advice. |
