The wellness concept in general and employee wellness programs in particular show much promise in abetting many of America's health care problems. One such widespread problem is addicitive behavior. A comprehensive understanding of addiction is necessary in order to design countervailing primary and secondary treatment programs. Addiction theory helps provide such understanding particularly when evaluated from the functional categories of biological, psychological and sociocultural theories of addiction. Noteworthy research in addiction is reviewed and specific implications for prevention and prevention program design are provided for each category of addiction theory. |
