Inhoud: Personal and empirical accounts document the negative image many people have of cancer and cancer patients. This article addresses one aspect of the image of cancer: causal explanations for etiology. Using data from two studies, the authors examined three questions: (1) Do people make different causal explanations for cancer than for other illnesses? (2) Are the causal explanations people make related to other perceptions of the patients? (3) Is blame for an illness associated with other perceptions of the patient? Findings from a study of college students suggest that cancer is judged to be caused less by person-related factors than are some other illnesses. However, the students linked personal responsibility with other negative perceptions of the cancer patient, and they reported a greater inclination to avoid cancer patients who they perceived to be responsible for their illness. Findings from a study of nurses indicated a similar pattern, except that the nurses did not link personal responsibility for etiology with avoidance of cancer patients.
