Inhoud: Recent studies and clinical reports have indicated the importance of the cancer patient's family in the management of the illness. This article discusses the physiological, cmotional, and behavioral consequences of cancer on the well members of the family. It emphasizes the connection between individual and interpersonal coping with stress and the family's ability to adapt, especially in relation to the influence of the family structure, roles, and relationships on the development of individual members and their perceptions of the patient and the patient's illness. Three examples illustrate the effect of the family's organization on the process of adaptation and the appropriate clinical responses to two types of families-the enmeshed family and the disengaged family. The concluding section summarizes the principles of clinical intervention with a family in which a member has cancer.
