Medical records of 88 cancer patients who died by suicide from 1973 to 1976 were analyzed for data on the primary site of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the degree of physical and mental suffering beforc the suicide. More than half the suicides occurred within the first year of the diagnosis. Nearly two-thirds of the patients were in an advanced or terminal phase and had severe symptoms of the disease. Onethird of the patients suffered from mental illness or distress before the onset of cancer, and about half the patients suffered such distress after their cancer was diagnosed. The majority of the suicides had frequent contacts with medical staff during their last year of life, although only one third were actually inpatients at the time of their suicide. |
