The role that coping may lay in mediating the psychological impact of cancer has been of considerable clinical and research interest. Despite this interest, however, the research has had several conceptual and methodological limitations that have resulted in weak and contradictory findings. The authors have used Lazarus and Folkman's transactional model of coping as a base from which to examine the influence of coping variables on the management of the demands of cancer. They discuss the measurement issues in researching this complex area, with reference to commonly cited instruments. In addition, they review recent research to identify the research questions and methodology that are most likely to be fruitful in exploring relationships between the demands of cancer, coping, and psychological impact. Suggestions are made for research that focuses on specific demands of cancer and incorporates different coping process variables more fully.
