Cancer patients continue to experience unmet psychosocial needs despite the presence of supportive services in inpatient and community settings. This article describes the model of a statewide, standardized, continuing education program for health professionals who care for cancer patients that was presented in 19 different locations in southeastern Pennsylvania. The authors use a structure-prccess-outcome format to present the development, implementation, and evaluation of the program As a result of the program, participants felt more comfortable about addressing psychosocial issues in oncology. This led to positive behavioral changes at the work site regarding the way patients with unmet psychosocial needs were identified, treated, and referred.
