Recent gerontological literature has focused on the special needs of elderly persons regarding the location and types of housing available in the community. Using Guttman's facet design, aspects of the physical and social environment were rated in relation to suburb preference and type of dwelling. The multidimensional scaling of results indicated four distinct regions with responses corresponding to the four sets of structuples generated by the facets of housing type and suburb type. These results indicated an initial preference for remaining in one's own home in one's current suburb, a second preference for a hostel in the current suburb, followed by a home in another suburb or a hostel in another suburb. Within groupings, the distinction between the physical and social aspects was maintained. |
