As more and more elderly people move to senior housing for independent living, the need to address leisure activities becomes increasingly important. This paper discusses the role and rationale for the occupational therapist as facilitator for leisure time use in this housing option. The theoretical base is the Model of Human Occupation. Literature is reviewed for leisure definitions, the role of the facilitator, environment of staff behavior, wellness, and leisure options. The conclusion summarizes the rationale as well as the role of the occupational therapist as leisure facilitator. |
