Title: Legal Bibliographies and Shared Resources
Author: Pagel, Scott B.
Appeared in: Legal reference services quarterly
Paging: Volume 9 (1989) nr. 1-2 pages 99-120
Year: 1989-07-11
Contents: Bibliographies such as library book catalogs which detail the holdings of particular collections have been invaluable to the researcher or librarian for locating needed materials. The concept of a printed catalog has fallen into disfavor, and has been replaced by card catalogs and, more recently, bibliographic utilities and on-line catalogs. These databases can prove to be useful tools for sharing resources in much the same way that printed library catalogs were. However, the power given to outside users by providing them with information on and increased access to a collection has potentially grave consequences unless appropriate steps are taken to allocate the resulting burden.
