The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism identified the elderly as a "special" population at increased risk for alcoholism in the Fifth Report to Congress on Alcohol and Health. There is an established need to educate service providers and health care professionals, as well as older adults and their informal caregivers, about the prevention, recognition, and treatment of geriatric alcoholism. These target groups were specifically recruited to attend a live, interactive satellite teleconference that featured nationally-known experts. A significant knowledge gain provided evidence of the program's effectiveness. The feasibility of including consumers and family caregivers when marketing geriatric education opportunities available through distance learning vehicles is discussed.
