The article reviews the nature of distance education and argues that there is a lack of theory based on knowledge of students' motivation and experience. The article considers British literature on the motivations to learn of older people. It discusses particular findings from the British Open University which suggest that older distance students emphasize personal development, subject interest, personal challenge, and past missed educational opportunities, as well as some instrumentality as their motivations to learn. The article discusses a small pilot project, based at Lancaster University, concerned with devising and monitoring a distance course specially created for older people. Evaluation showed, even in this much more restricted setting, older students were motivated by enjoyment of learning and pleased with the flexibility of distance education.
