A vast amount of knowledge about the elderly in our society is difficult to convey using a standard lecture format, thus, a board game that models the lives of older citizens may be useful. After establishing educational objectives and reviewing currently available games, it was decided to formulate a new board game called Gerontopoly©. In a two phase study the acceptibility and efficacy of the game was evaluated. Using a twenty-two item, post-game questionnaire, participants reported the game was interesting, easy to play, and enjoyable. The results also suggest the game can change attitudes and enhance awareness of the concerns of the elderly. The authors were unable to demonstrate the efficacy of the game by examinations. Using suggestions from the study a new version has recently been completed. |
