Techniques and strategies used to train research assistants in qualitative data collection for a study of family caregivers of dementia patients in a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) are presented. Pre-fieldwork lectures - gaining entry and developing rapport, presentation of self and the project in the research setting, and potential problems and stresses inherent in this type of research - are summarized. Techniques for training master's level graduate students in participant observation and in writing and analyzing field notes are suggested. Strategies for dealing with the stresses of fieldwork are also discussed. Different "types" of research assistant are identified and suggestions are made on ways to enhance their performance. |
