Interdisciplinary Health Team Role Taking as a Function of Health Professional Education

Titel: Interdisciplinary Health Team Role Taking as a Function of Health Professional Education
Auteur: Aaronson, William E.
Verschenen in: Gerontology & geriatrics education
Paginering: Jaargang 12 (1992) nr. 1 pagina's 97-110
Jaar: 1992-01-30
Inhoud: The delivery of health services has been affected profoundly by the aging of the population and resultant increase in prevalence of complex chronic illnesses. The health needs of persons with chronic illnesses can best be met through an integrated continuum of care. Among the more important integrating mechanisms is the interdisciplinary health care team. Despite the intuitive appeal, team performance appears to be inhibited by conflict or incongruence between autonomous and collegial roles. Health professional education prepares individuals well for professional roles emphasizing autonomy in decision making, but must do a better job at preparing individuals for organizational roles, which require collegiality, such as interdisciplinary teamwork.
