The present study was aimed at elucidating the professional situation, and the degree to which the universities and the society outside the university utilize the expertise and ability of Swedish emeritus professors. Fifty-two fellows of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences in Gothenburg were asked about their present activities, attitudes towards the retirement age, and experiences in retirement. It was found that most emeritus professor are continuing with research and consultant activities several years after their formal retirement. Anecdotal data suggest that, to a relatively high degree, the world outside the universities is more eager to make use of their competence than the universities. Strategies for improving the situation of senior scholars are discussed in relation to these findings. |
