POLISH STUDIES ON THE PENETRATION OF SOLAR RADIATION INTO LAKES

Titel: POLISH STUDIES ON THE PENETRATION OF SOLAR RADIATION INTO LAKES
Auteur: MIKULSKI, ZDZISŁAW
Verschenen in: Hydrological sciences journal
Paginering: Jaargang 18 (1973) nr. 3 pagina's 303-309
Jaar: 1973-09-01
Inhoud: In Poland measurements of the penetration of solar radiation into lakes were initiated in 1935, using the limnoactinometer of Stenz. To the present, information about the transmissivity of lake waters has been obtained for many different types of lakes. The investigations showed big differences in transmission. The surface water layer, 1-2 m thick, which absorbs at least 50 per cent of the solar energy (especially that of infrared radiation) proved to be least transmissive. The transmission coefficient oscillates within a wide range of 30-90 per cent. Under-ice measurements indicated a considerable attenuation of radiation, about 90 per cent being absorbed by ice. A full year's series of measurements permitted one to find seasonal differences in transmissivity; the highest values were obtained in September. By applying filters it became possible to determine the penetration of different parts of the solar spectrum. Measurements in fishponds were also taken and considered to be a part of the study of the heat balance of water.
