During the summer of 1987 Hofstra University's Axinn Library began a massive barcoding of the library's circulating collection using a combination of smart and dumb barcodes prepared by the bibliographic utility UTLAS. Upon project completion, about 30,000 smart barcodes were unable to be affixed to a corresponding book in the collection. A partial inventory of the collection was a by-product of barcoding. Inventories can be conducted both cost effectively and time efficiently when new technologies are utilized. |
