Each year libraries lose thousands of dollars when books are lost or stolen. Determining what the patron should pay for lost books is seldom easy. This paper describes how one library reexamined the issues of book loss and replacement costs. Circulation records from a six-month period were analyzed for patterns of book loss and to determine what the replacement charges would be for in-print and out-of-print books. Following the investigation, the library implemented a price schedule to replace the $35.00 standard fee formerly charged for lost out-of-print books. |
