Report results of a study designed to gather information on how best to reduce the menace of theft, loss and mutilation in a University Library in Nigeria, with particular reference to students' input to overcoming these problems. The study focused on two different user groups, undergraduate and postgraduate students. Through a questionnaire survey at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Library, Bauchi, an attempt was made to determine the reasons why students steal, damage or lose library books. Behind these questions are the underlying assumptions that book theft, loss and mutilation occur as a result of several circumstances, but could possibly be reduced to a certain degree with appropriate preventive measures in place. The survey established the reasons for stealing library books; factors that can cause damage; students' attitude to theft; penalties; preventive measures, etc. The SPSS statistical package was used for data analysis. This article concludes with a number of useful suggestions on more effective library security measures.
