Western Kentucky University's main library is difficult to monitor: it is spread out in two connecting buildings on a total of eight floors. Security and safety of library users has been effectively maintained for several years by a staff of student patrollers, directed by a full time security specialist. Selection and training of student patrollers, and regular duties are described, with examples of problems encountered and how the staff successfully resolves them. Procedures for serious problem patron encounters, including the adoption of a problem patron policy, are addressed. |
