Inhoud: Academic libraries continue to grapple with the problem of mutilated materials. A questionnaire was sent to a random sample of students at Kent State University to determine the extent of their experience in mutilating periodicals and their attitudes toward mutilation and other aspects of the library. Of the 232 students responding, 11.6% admitted to mutilating a journal in any library; 63.79% had encountered a mutilated periodical at least once. Sixty-three and seven tenths percent had encountered a mutilated periodical at least once. "Ripoffs" tended to be freshmen who used copy machines less and believed the copies were too expensive and of poor quality. They also felt that mutilation was less wrong than did "ronripoffs." The results are compared to two previous studies, one done over a decade earlier in the same library. Implications of the results for library action and future research are discussed.
