This chapter identifies and describes nine key issues that will impact the future of portal development and its potential to become the preferred tool to discover quality information resources. The chapter notes the lack of consistency in how libraries currently define a portal. Key issues include metasearching, content and service description, electronic resource management, librarian/user expectations and current product functionality, single product or separate components, uniform view versus links to proprietary interfaces, open source versus proprietary software, workflow integration, and personalization and contextualization. The chapter references the Scholars Portal Project as one example of portal implementations in research libraries and how the seven libraries in the project are addressing the issues described in the article. |
