Students in the one-credit College Information Seeking Skills class complained about the workload, groaned over assignments, and declined to participate in class. How could the class be redesigned to enable students to enjoy the work, participate, and get excited about libraries? The author tried a new approach, based on informal education theories, which engages students in the creation of the syllabus. The participatory syllabus has its own challenges, yet is more rewarding for the instructor. Students in the participatory classes were more engaged in the classroom activities and discussions. Their final projects showed an increased level of interest and creativity. Perhaps fewer topics get covered in the participatory classroom, but “the less we teach the more they learn.” |
