Contents: In-service training plays a pivotal role in the prepara- tion of ublic services staff in libraries. This paper will define train- ing anffocus on the planning process necessary for the effective development and implementation of on-the-job training programs, including the goals of a training program, the general and specific behavioral objectives of a program, and the knowled e, skills, and f abilities required by all public services positions for ef ective service within varied library environments. Part I1 of the aper will discuss the selection of appropriate training techniques an 1 formats and con- centrate on the use of video as a training tool and the practical train- ing applications that have been developed within the library world and in other sectors. Video is a promising tool which should be utilized for training purposes.
