The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between the four self-reported measures of the Community Healthy Activities Model Program for Seniors (CHAMPS) questionnaire with the performance-based measures of the AAHPERD functional fitness test. Two groups of subjects were recruited for the studyan active-control cohort (n = 16) of older adults that exercised regularly and an experimental group (n = 34) of older adults that began an 8-week community program. The CHAMPS questionnaire and the AAHPERD test were given to both groups before and after the program. Despite improvements in all the AAHPERD parameters, there were no significant changes between pre— and post-measurements of the CHAMPS questionnaire in the experimental group. The results from this investigation revealed that this survey does not appear to be an appropriate tool to measure physical activity changes in shorter community-based physical activity programs for older adults that prescribe a single multi-component exercise routine. |
