This article describes a major sporting event specifically designed for the frail aged and young adults with disabilities living at home in the community. The organization committee representing day respite centers, students and faculty from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), and the Home and Community Care (HACC) Resource Unit, Queensland Health, has successfully conducted the Seniors' Games in Brisbane (Queensland) for the last seven years. Since 1995, approximately 600 participants per year (with an average age of 85 years) from South East Queensland day respite centers have participated in modified activities supported by volunteer nursing, human movement, and physical education students. Promoting activity amongst the frail aged has been shown to improve function, prevent or decrease disability, promote self-esteem and self-confidence, foster enjoyment in team activity, and help to bridge the generation gap.
