Analysis of the bacterium Pantoea (=Enterobacter) agglomerans Ewing and Fife, and the fungus, Scopulariopsis brevicaulis (Sacc.) Bainier, recovered from the internal contents of adult females of the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say), showed the presence of 2,6-dichlorophenol and/or 2,4-dichlorophenol by gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy. These chlorophenols are similar or identical to common tick attractants, suggesting a linkage between pheromone production and involvement of tick-associated bacteria and fungi.
