The long-term effect of intensive agricultural practices on oribatid mite distribution and diversity was examined. Soil cores were taken in agricultural areas which were subdivided into three adjacent strip plots: cultivated, grassy, and woods. Diversity of collected oribatids was noted. Statistical interpretations revealed that oribatid heterogeneity, at the generic level, was significantly reduced in the total cultivated plots as compared to the total wood plot sections. The average number of soil mite genera encountered in the grassy plots (-x = 3.67) was more than that encountered in the cultivated plots (-x = 2.92) but less than the wood plots (-x = 5.58) and not significantly different from the cultivated plots. The possible use of oribatids as environmental “indicators” was noted. |
