Surveys of Shetland's hill-lands since 1982 indicate that the Whimbrel population now numbers 413-471 pairs. With an estimated 21-24 pairs elsewhere in Scotland this represents c. 95% of the British total. The majority of birds (c. 75%) occur in loose aggregations of more than 10 pairs with maximum density recorded at 17 pairs/km2 . This is equivalent to, or greater than, values found more centrally in the species' range. Whimbrel have expanded their distribution within Shetland and increased in numbers since the 1950s; the latter at an estimated overall annual rate of 7.5%. It is suggested that this population shift is most likely attributed to changing climatic factors. |
