The organ-genus Betulites has become the repository for Betula-like leaves or poorly preserved leaf impressions having a Betula-like outline. Members of the genus are fairly rare in the Upper Cretaceous of the Soviet Union. Only one locality has yielded large numbers of specimens and that is the Kyzl-Dzhar mud-cone (northwestern spurs of the Karatau Range, southern Kazakhstan). The age of the deposit is Upper Cretaceous, Turonian. Collections from the site were determined by A. V. Yarmolenko in 1935. He assigned some of the leaf impressions to the species Betulites westii Lesquereux. The identity of the material with B. westii is correct. New collections by the author include many impressions of this species. As a result of studies of these impressions and evaluation of the material described by Yarmolenko and by Lesquereux from the Dakota Sandstone Flora, the author suggests that the leaves be assigned to the genus Platanus instead of Betulites. --F.
