Year: 1977-01
Contents: The region consists mainly of Neogene tuffogenic-sedimentary rocks overlainlocally by a well-developed cover of Quaternary deposits. In a number of places, older rocks crop out among the Neogene deposits. On the basis of the structuralfeatures of the rocks, their composition, and the presence of a large numberof fossil invertebrate burrows, including decapod medium-tailed crayfish, weconclude that the Neogene marine basin was shallow. Formation of the deep-waterSouth Okhotsk basin began at the end of the Pliocene and proceeded mainlyduring Quaternary time. The slope of the basin has a fundamentally similarstructure to that of the shelf. —Authors.
