This article outlines best practices for teachers who are faced with the often-daunting task of teaching online using the World Wide Web. In many cases, these instructors are asked to design, develop and implement a Web-based or Web-enhanced course in a short period of time. Often administrators and faculty alike are unaware of the preparation time needed to effectively design and deliver a quality distance course. This article offers guidelines and suggests useful resources in the areas of: providing faculty orientation, designing the online syllabus, building a social community of learners, and moderating online discussions to improve interactivity. These key strategies are crucial to successfully directing students through the provision of quality online learning experiences. Web links are provided to guide the reader through the process. |
