Volunteer Tutoring has played an important role in Adult Basic Education for fifteen years and now serves as an adjunct to the P.C.C. Developmental Education programs as well. Students unable to attend classes are referred to the tutoring programs. Basic skills instructors may request tutors to provide additional assistance for individual students or to serve as classroom aides. Two paid staff members work to meet these needs through recruitment, training, and placement of volunteers and on-going supervision of student/tutor activities. Program staff assist with the design of individualized instructional plans and development of supplementary teaching materials. They provide technical assistance to tutors and to teachers who use volunteers, and the tutor supervisors are responsible for all record keeping and reporting. Currently over 600 volunteers from all walks of life-retired people, business professionals, housewives, and students-are working as 1: I tutors, tutors for small groups (3-4 students) or tutoring centers, as mini-class teachers (8-10 students) at community sites, and as tutors in college drop-in centers and alternative learning centers, and as teachers' aides.
