If you have only an hour and a half to teach students everything they need to know to do research for a short paper, what do you do? Having experienced less than optimum results from other bibliographic instruction experiments, we have finally met with success team-teaching two basic resources: the COM catalog and the Readers' Guide. Pre-tests indicate students' familiarity with these two tools and are used to divide the classes into learning/practice groups. The result of this abbreviated orientation is that students receive a firm foundation in using a catalog and an index and are then able to begin their research independently and to apply the learned concepts to more sophisticated sources. |
