Under a grant from the California Community College Chancellor's Office, a consortium of San Diego County community colleges undertook a program to provide distance learners with access to library reference services. The program included telephone, e-mail and real time chat service, serving four colleges using an off-site, contract librarian. The results, as measured by number of queries, varied among the colleges, with the heaviest use coming from the college that implemented the strongest advertising program. Limitations on the consortium included the lack of reciprocal borrowing privileges and the inability to share electronic resources. The final project report recommended dissolving the consortium and strengthening individual college digital reference services. |
