Ariel Document Delivery and the Small Academic Library

Title: Ariel Document Delivery and the Small Academic Library
Author: Berger, Marshall A.
Appeared in: College and undergraduate libraries
Paging: Volume 3 (1996) nr. 2 pages 49-56
Year: 1996-10-26
Contents: Almost every smaller academic library could benefit from installing Ariel electronic document delivery. Early methods of fulfilling interlibrary loan requests were often slow. The arrival of the fax machine reduced delivery times, but image quality suffered. Electronic document delivery has come of age in today's interlibrary loan departments. Computers and the Internet are changing virtually every area of library operations. Document delivery over the Internet is already a part of those changes. Although for Ariel to work, both sending and receiving libraries must have Ariel software installed and both also need Internet access, and although traditional forms of interlibrary loan will remain, since few libraries would choose to scan an entire book, Ariel can improve the efficiency of interlibrary loan operations while enhancing services to library users. Installation of the hardware is straightforward and integration into the work flow is simple.
