The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, serves a fast-growing metropolitan area. Increases in student population and new academic programs resulted in recruiting additional teaching faculty. This growth brought increases in acquisitions budgets. As collections grew, a cataloging backlog of hundreds of videos was created. The backlog was a major obstacle to effective access of newly acquired video materials. The problem was solved by implementing “cataloging shortcuts.” Libraries with similar backlogs in video materials, or libraries that do not have a cataloger whose principle assignment is video cataloging, may find an adaptation of the UNLV solution useful. |
