While much has been written recently about new methods to recruit individuals to the library profession, less has been written about attempts by states to develop the next generation of library leaders. This article examines the efforts by librarians in one state, Illinois, to address this need by creating a new program, Synergy: The Illinois Library Leadership Initiative. Launched by Jean Wilkins, Director of the Illinois State Library, 60 librarians from different types of Illinois libraries have participated in the program in the last two years. The author describes the program and a survey she conducted of academic Syner-gists to begin to assess the impact of the program on the development of academic library leaders in the state. Using the first survey of this group, the author offers preliminary insights into the effectiveness of the program in order to determine if this model may be of value to academic librarians in other states. |
