This paper argues that the revolution taking place in the discipline of English, from New Criticism to ''Theory'' requires a new approach to the library. First, instead of doing conventional author/title searches, English faculty need to begin their articles grounded in a theory--so a different kind of indexing is needed instead of the usual MLA Bibliography. Second, the change in the canon of literature is also forcing new approaches to research upon the English faculty, simply working up the most basic freshman courses. Finally, listservs on the Internet are becoming the means by which faculty ask for help, search the literature, and communicate with colleagues. The result is a change in the view of the role of the librarian in helping faculty do these new kinds of searches. The library itself changes from a repository of old texts to a point of inter-disciplinary interconnection. |
