This paper outlines the development of a method for undertaking conservation audits of Special Collections of books and manuscripts, which not only gives an overall condition rating for each collection, but also gives accurate estimates of the treatment costs of each collection, based on approved statistical sampling methods. So far, the method has been used to audit the printed book collections of the Special Collections section of Leeds University Library, in order to set treatment priorities and to enhance bids for grant applications. The method will be used to audit the manuscript collections for future bids. |
