The impact of study tours as an intensive and experiential professional development opportunity for librarians is largely unexplored in the literature. Building on their previous article, which systematically evaluated the 2002 WESS Study Tour's impact on the professional development of early career subject specialists, the authors use the 2006 WESS Study Tour as a complementary case study to assess the value of study tours for subject specialists with a range of experience, their institutions, and sponsoring organizations. Participating librarians and representatives from sponsoring organizations were surveyed about their study tour experiences. Lessons learned suggest basic guidelines for optimizing benefits to all stake-holding groups. |
