There has long been debate in the academic library community concerning the best method of allocating funds along disciplinary, or subject-specific, lines. Central to this debate is the question of suitability of formula-driven allocation. Once a library has decided to use a mathematical formula in allocating funds, it has the responsibility of developing a fair, rigorously constructed and effective formula. This article documents the work of a subject allocation committee charged with making the allocation process more equitable at George Mason University's Fenwick Library. After a thorough literature review, a decision was made to use a formula-based procedure. The article describes how factors to be used in the formula were selected. Data collection methods are then examined and the formula itself presented. |
