Inhoud: This is a case study of the University of Agriculture Makurdi Library in Nigeria. The questionnaire-based research was undertaken with the objective of finding a concrete base on which to plan library and information services to support a new academic programme. The new University of Agriculture Makurdi (UAM), with a unique mission and mandate, had been superimposed on the Federal University of Technology Makurdi (FUTM) which had existed for seven years. Consequently, it became necessary to assess existing library and information resources so as to determine the extent of their suitability for what was a new agricultural programme. Since the faculty staff were assumed to be the best judges of the academic requirements of the new programme, their views were considered crucial in the planning of the new library and information service. As the faculty staff were not many, complete sampling was used in the distribution of the questionnaires. From the results of the data analyses, it was discovered that 95% of the faculty staff sampled indicated that the UAM Library could not effectively support the new academic programme. It was discovered that existing stock could support the new programme only to a small extent and it was adjudged sufficient to meet only 45% of needs. Apart from that, 20% of the faculty staff indicated that the existing stock was of little relevance to their academic needs. The logical conclusion was that the UAM could not rely on the existing resources of the library to execute the mandate of making Nigeria self-reliant in food production. On the basis of these findings, it was recommended that an aggressive acquisitions programme involving both academic librarians and faculty staff be embarked upon by the UAM Library. It was decided also that an ad hoc fund needed to be made available in hard currency for necessary resources to be paid for and brought in on time and that thereafter the prescribed annual recurrent budget of the Library ought to be approved and money released very early in each financial year for the steady development of the resources of the UAM Library.
