This paper reports on the development, reliability, and validity of the Behavior Assessment Scales (BAS) and describes trends in participant functioning of participants in an adult day care program for the memory-impaired. The purpose of the scales is to provide an easily administered tool that adult-day care staff can use to assess participant functioning on a regular basis. Trend and graphic analysis of changes in functioning demonstrate the overall decrease in functional abilities of cognitively-impaired participants. However, rates of decline vary by type of ability. We conclude that the BAS is an easily administered valid and reliable tool for adult day care staff. Systematic assessment of functioning of memory impaired participants can enhance care planning, provide information to families and other professional staff, and determine ability to continue in program. |
