Contents: The Chinese Anomalous Sentences Test (CAST) was developed as a screening tool to facilitate the differentiation of dementia from depression among the Hong Kong elderly. In this preliminary study, the test was found to be of acceptable internal consistency and its validity was established by comparing the performance of the dementing (n = 12), depressed (n = 12), and control (n = 12) groups on the CAST and several related measures of memory. Whereas the dementing patients were most severely impaired in the recall of semantically anomalous sentences, the depressed patients showed only minor deficits, with their performance closely resembling that of the normal controls.
