For most of us. childhood feelings are manageable and healthy, even though they may cause us considerable pain and confusion at the time: but for children who have experienced the trauma of rejection, neglect, or abuse, their inner world is often in a greater turmoil than the “real” world around them. The worker who attempts to achieve communication with the child's inner world is therefore operating in highly sensitive territory; here, timing, patience and an ability to demonstrate real empathy are essential. |
