Chapter 7: The Sexually Abused Child in Specialized Foster Care

Title: Chapter 7: The Sexually Abused Child in Specialized Foster Care
Author: McFadden, Emily Jean
Appeared in: Child & youth services
Paging: Volume 12 (1989) nr. 1-2 pages 91-106
Year: 1989-09-14
Contents: Placing sexually abused children in untrained foster homes creates risk that these children will again be victimized because their distorted patterns of communications and behavior of touching within families will be misunderstood by the sexullay abused child. Foster parents of sexually abused children require training to understand the message sexually abused children have typically received from their environments, the nature of sexual abuse as a progression of events as well as the context of the specific abuse experience of the child being placed, the difference between male and female abuse victims, typical behavioral patterns of sexually abused children and how to manage these behaviors in light of the developmental needs of all children, and to be able to structure family activities in a way that sets clear boundaries to both protect the foster child as well as the foster parents. Foster parents need to understand how to assist the child in learning how to appropriately express sexuality and to live comfortably within a family setting.
