The ongoing debate over a number of controversial questions in the field of alcoholism is seen as being both unnecessary and potentially detrimental to the development of the field. Three major questions are examined: the disease versus learned behavior question, the abstinence versus controlled drinking question, and the question of the definition of the term "alcoholism." A review of the relevant literature, empirical and otherwise, leads to the conclusion that the dichotomy implied by the phrasing of the first two questions is a false one. Resolution of the debate over these seemingly irresolvable questions is indeed possible. A proposal to bring some definitional clarity to the field is offered. This definitional proposal allows for the integrated resolution of the three questions under consideration. |
