Title: Massage Therapy in Alcohol/Drug Treatment
Author: Adcock, Cynthia L.
Appeared in: Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly
Paging: Volume 4 (1988) nr. 3 pages 87-102
Year: 1988-06-16
Contents: Massage therapy offers a variety of benefits to both clients and counselors in chemical dependency treatment programs. Massage therapy is also useful to many recovering people after treatment, as part of their long-term healing process. Quicker detoxification, deeper relaxation, and greater self-acceptance are among the primary benefits of massage therapy. In addition, massage facilitates an awareness of unresolved emotional issues that have been "stored" as a muscle tensions. This paper describes a massage therapy component of an inpatient treatment program, and discusses the use of massage or other bodywork therapies on an outpatient basis for recovering people.
